Microchipping

This is a permanent identification device programmed with a unique identification code that is registered to you. Unlike collars or tags it cannot be taken off or lost; and with tattooing this becomes illegible as the animal gets older.

Microchipping is a legal requirement for all dogs over the age of eight weeks and from 10th June 2024 for all cats over the age of twenty weeks. We also provide microchipping for other small animals.

What is a microchip?

It is a tiny chip, hardly bigger than a grain of rice. The chip itself is within a special capsule, designed to sit comfortably under your pet’s skin.

Every microchip has a unique code, and this has all your pets details including its name, your name, your address and phone number.

How is it implanted?

It is a simple injection into the skin, just like a vaccination. The microchip is invisible and can’t be tampered with. Once it’s done it lasts a lifetime.

How does it work?

Your details are then sent to a data base centre where they are stored. The database is accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so you can be together again in no time at all Should your animal go missing and turn up at an animal shelter or veterinary practice it will be scanned for an identification chip. Most animal shelters and veterinary practices have scanners. When the chip is scanned it emits a low frequency radio wave that gives out an identification number. We then call the data base centre and give them this number, and then they will tell us to whom the animal is registered to and how to contact them.
